Pardon the hyperbole, but "Drop" just might feature one of the most jaw-dropping tricks that I have ever seen done in a music video before. It amazes me just how little play the video got on MTV and it's never really featured on any "best-of" list, which really surprises me because it's such a unique concept. The members of Pharcyde aren't just walking backwards, they actually performed the entire song backwards. So, when the video is reversed it creates this very surreal effect where everything around them is backwards, while they move forwards. In the midst of all this, we see balls bouncing upwards, people sliding up on a rail, water jumping up into the air, and all other kinds of madness. One of Jonze's trademarks as a director is beginning videos as if nothing strange is happening. You have already seen that numerous times on this list, for example, "Weapon of Choice" features Christopher Walken sleeping before he wakes up and dances around the hotel room. The same is true for "Drop." We begin the video with the members of Pharcyde seemingly rapping normally and walking normally (though a bit stiffly). It's when they suddenly start tumbling and jumping in and out of the frame when we notice something is oddly different. It's just a brilliant, unique concept for a video. While it's largely based on one gimmick, it works because of how they execute it. They have so much fun with it, which makes it so enjoyable to watch.
