There was no real reason for Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom to be a prequel: the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark left the door open for further adventures, and it would have been easy to show Indy going after a different mystical artefact following the events of the first flick.

As such, the best move Temple Of Doom makes in regards to its prequel status is that it doesn't make it all that obvious that it even is a prequel; most people who sat down to the film probably didn't even notice the caption during the first scene which tells us we're in "Shanghai, 1935," dating the events to a year before Raiders.

Wrongly believed to the worst of the original trilogy, it must be said that this is one of the most entertaining blockbusters of the '80s; a tour-de-force of inventive set pieces and witty characterisation, backed by what is arguably John Williams' most luscious musical score, makes for an A-grade B-movie of epic proportions. It feels rougher round the edges when compared to Raiders, but it's just as much fun.

Despite its ambiguous approach to being a prequel, look closely and Temple of Doom also reveals itself to be a neat origin story in disguise; the Indy of this film is a cynical treasure hunter seeking out his fortune and glory, but he's transformed into a hero by way of the child rescue-based adventures witnessed here.
