10 Greatest Religious Horror Movies Of All Time
7. The Reaping
Most times, whenever a religious horror movie is made, it goes in the direction of exorcism and possession. While this is logical as it is one of the scariest concepts within the confines of religion, it does give a sense of similarity to all these outings.
The reaping stands out as it uses another biblical phenomenon that is surprisingly not used more often. It takes the cliché of the sceptic investigating something supernatural and turns out a fresh experience. We see as Katherine - played by Hilary Swank - visits a town that appears to be suffering from the ten biblical plagues.
Many shocking moments occur within the run-time of the film, and some of the imagery is unbelievably creative. The focus on plagues and their biblical implications gives it a real sense of style and identity. The avenue for creativity isn't limited to the effects the phenomenon has on people - such as possession is - but rather how it damages the town and world around it.
It is another movie that has flaws, but for a compelling religious-inspired horror experience, it is worth a watch.
