Now we come to the first and arguably the best of Yoji Yamada's efforts; released in 2002, The Twilight Samurai follows Iguchi Seibei, a Samurai of low class who attempts to keep himself and his family afloat after becoming a widower.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who went on to star in The Last Samurai a year later, does a fantastic drop of portraying the protagonist as the close bond with his two young daughters forms the emotional heart of the film. As he encounters adversity from those around him, his abilities and composure are pushed to the breaking point.

The Twilight Samurai went on to command arguably the most respect from foreign audiences after its release. Being the first Japanese film to be nominated at the Oscars for best foreign film for twenty two years, it had an affecting impact on those who watched it.

Much of its success comes down to the lowly, relatable nature of Iguchi. A simple family man who wishes to better himself while providing for those closest to him, his story is effortlessly engrossing. As he is mocked by the Samurai at a higher class than him, the audience roots for him to rise above his humble roots and achieve a greater favour in his local community.
