3. Um, So There's A Murderous Pedophile Loose On The Las Vegas Strip? - Con-Air (1997)
Con-Air is one of the most mindlessly entertaining action flicks of the '90s, and that's mostly thanks to its awesome cast and relentless action sequences. It's big, it's dumb and it's serious fun. It has also a murderous pedophile character called Garland Greene, as played by Steve Buscemi, 'cause who else is there to play that kind of character? The plot of the movie concerns a convict, Nicolas Cage, who is being transported home in an airplane crammed to the brim with the world's worst criminals. The movie ends when said plane crashes on the Las Vegas strip, though Cage is reunited with his wife and daughter, LeAnn Rimes lets us know things are gonna be okay, and that's that. Almost all of the criminals die or are recaptured. Well, expect for one: Garland Greene. The pedophile. At one point mid-way through
Con-Air, the film attempts to subvert our expectations by putting Greene in a scene with a little girl and having us believe he's going to rape and kill her. He doesn't, of course, which - for some reason - means he's innocent? Except it doesn't, as such a thing is never confirmed. And where is he when the movie comes to a close? He's in a
casino,
playing craps, like it's the most normal thing in the world. And, to be fair, the movie treats it as such: "Sweet Home Alabama" even rocks onto the soundtrack, letting us know that this is completely fine and to, you know, lighten up, man. But the facts are there for everyone to see: this man is almost definitely a murderer and a pedophile. And now he's out there, living some twisted fantasy. Murderous tendencies and all.
