10 Haunting Deaths In Horror Movies (That We Never See)

3. Samantha - I Am Legend

Alien Lambert
Warner Bros.

In this Richard Matheson adaptation, scientists find the cure for cancer after genetically re-engineering measles. Unfortunately, the virus has a nasty habit of turning 99% of people into dark-seeking cannibals.

One of the few uninfected, Dr. Robert Neville has spent years formulating a cure, with his German shepherd Samantha serving as his only companion.

While Robert is out and about, he gets ensnared in one of the Darkseekers' booby traps. When several infected dogs attack Robert, Samantha comes to his aid, allowing him to escape.

Tragically, Sam is bitten during the scuffle, meaning it's only a matter of time before she turns. Knowing he has precious time left with her, Robert takes his pup back to the lab and cradles her in his arms. When the infection sets in, Sam tries to attack Robert, forcing him to strangle her to death.

Although we don’t see Sam being put out of her misery, the anguish on Robert's face speaks volumes. Not only is this scene excruciating to watch for any dog-lover, you can't help feeling devastated for our hero, knowing he just killed his only friend in the world.
