10 Heroic Movie Characters Who Actually Didn't Affect The Plot
7. Truman - The Truman Show
A slightly different implication to the rest of the article, given that Truman (Jim Carrey) changes quite a lot by the end of the film.
He is free from the perpetual, invasive cameras that track his entire life, and can live in the quiet sanctuary of the real world away.
Except he's not and he definitely won't. The tragic reality of Truman's life after the end credits is that he has achieved absolutely nothing. The specifics and the locations of his life might have changed, and the restricting dome might be gone, but there's no way the most famous man in America, and possibly on the planet (the implications of his existence and escape must surely have been globally recognised) but he's going to live the same life in perpetuity.
Truman will be followed by cameras everywhere, hounded by requests for TV appearances, and his life will be invaded. He has merely moved from an allegorical bubble reflecting the outer world to a realised version of the same circumstances.
Even more so, if you want to take this on a religious turn, Truman is still at every petty whim of a merciless creator propelled by a yearning desire for his own entertainment.
