10 Heroic Movie Characters Who Actually Didn't Affect The Plot
5. The Reverend Mel Gibson (& Family) - Signs
The complexity of M Night Shyamalan's twisty but ultimately silly sci-fi shocker plot might have been clever at the time, but there's an almighty plot hole that would have resulted in exactly the same result as the end of the film anyway.
The climax of the film features the revelation that the alien invaders, who clearly made no attempt to plan their invasion, are fatally averse to water. The invaders are thus defeated when Mel Gibson's odd live-in brother (Joaquin Phoenix) throws glasses of water at one of them after hitting it with a baseball bat.
No matter how impressive that short-term victory is, it ignores the fact that the aliens have attempted to invade a planet that is made up of about 70% water, where it rains everywhere, and where they would sooner or later realise that their presence meant all of their troops kept dying. You'd have thought any alien force who were willing to traverse the galaxy would have checked that said planet wasn't mostly made of the one thing that is most deadly to them.
