Towards the end of Jordan Peele's chilling horror-thriller Us, it's revealed that the 'tethered' versions of the people living on the surface have been existing underground for generations, mimicking their counterparts from afar in a depressing rabbit infested environment.

Yet, nods towards the existence of underground life came very early on in the movie, during the opening scenes of a TV playing and when Adelaide is taken to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk by her parents.

In the TV scene we see VHS copies of C.H.U.D .and The Goonies next to the television set. C.H.U.D. is a story which contains monsters dragging people underground and The Goonies is a film about a bunch of kids heading down into an underground world. Peele was planting 'tethered' seeds from the very moment his 2019 film got underway.

Also, in the Beach Boardwalk opening scene, Adelaide's father can be seen playing a fun fair game which involves an individual smashing unwelcome creatures back into the ground called Whack-A-Mole. This again looks like a brilliant piece of foreshadowing for the unsettling story which is about to unfold.
