10 Hidden Details In Opening And Closing Movie Scenes You Completely Missed
8. Cape Fear (1991) - Is It A Happy Ending?
It may not be perfect, but Martin Scorsese’s 90s remake of the classic revenge thriller is interesting in a lot of ways, including it’s brilliant opening sequence.
Much like the original, the film centres on released convict, Max Cady (Robert De Niro), who attempts to get revenge on the lawyer that wronged him, with his family, including young daughter, Danielle (Juliette Lewis), caught in the crossfire.
The film opens with a close-up shot of Danielle's eyes, which goes from red, then changes to white and then goes to normal. The film ends in a similar fashion - just as we think Max Cady has been defeated, the camera zooms into Danielle’s eyes, and Scorsese uses this striking red filter again before the credits roll.
At the beginning, Scorsese uses this red filter to hint that there will be a more violent and malevolent story ahead (without it, it would just be an image of an innocent young girl). And, the ending filter does the exact same thing.
It makes you suddenly rethink the so-called “happy ending” that we have been given, and we begin to suspect that possibly Max has secretly survived his apparent death.
