10 Hidden Gem Horror Monster Movies

8. Nightbreed

When thinking of movies adapted from the works of the legendary Clive Barker, many will automatically think of Hellraiser or Candyman. Sadly, few will make mention of the Englishman's Nightbreed.

In addition to being adapted from his 1988 Cabal story, Nightbreed was actually written and directed by Barker, being one of only three feature films to be helmed by the Liverpudlian. Despite bombing critically and at the box office upon its release, the movie has since gone on to become somewhat of a cult favourite - partly thanks to Barker being able to put his own director's cut together in the past decade.

While the bulk of this list is comprised of movies that feature one single monster, Nightbreed has a whole plethora of them dotted across its 102-minute runtime. And the catch here? Why, that's that the majority of these monsters are actually the good guys.

As for the wider plot of Nightbreed, Craig Sheffer's Aaron Boone is convinced that he's a serial killer by his doctor, Decker. In reality, this doctor - played by the iconic David Cronenberg, no less - is the killer and is merely framing his patient for these murders. Having had visions of a strange underground world known as Midian, Boone eventually ends up in that realm... which is filled by creatures known as the Nightbreed. With Decker keen to kill Boone in order to cover up his dirty little secret, Scheffer's character finds himself rallying the Nightbreed in helping him stay alive and also looks to help this repressed, once-hunted race in their quest for peace. Plus, there's a magical Danny Elfman score draped over all of this.

For those eager to check out this underrated classic, the folks over at Arrow Video have a fantastic two-disc Blu-ray of Nightbreed that's well worth adding to your collection.
