Also known as Welp in some territories, Jonas Govaerts' Cub is a creature feature with a nice slither of mystery at play.

Here, a group of scouts camp out in the woods, where they're regaled with campfire tales of urban legends and the like. One such tale involves a werewolf-like boy who stalks the very same woods where our youngsters have pitched their tents... and it soon becomes apparent that this particular urban legend may be a little more real than anyone expected.

Cub does have a little bit of a wobble during its final act, but Govaerts does extremely well to set his stall out throughout the rest of the movie, presenting a genuinely unnerving threat. There's also some fantastic performances here from a cast that is naturally a very young one - given that a scout group are our core protagonists - with Maurice Luijten particularly impressive as Sam, a member of this brigade who is mocked and bullied by his peers.

Regardless of its young cast, though, Cub does get incredibly gory when the action eventually starts to amp up, with the film far not afraid to dish out some bloodshed and brutality.
