7. The Devil's Candy

They Look Like People
IFC Midnight

In The Devil's Candy, a struggling artist called Ethan (Jesse Hellman) moves into a haunted house with his family, unaware that dark forces are influencing his mind through his art. When the insidious entity begins to twist the mind of a local serial killer called Ray (Pruitt Taylor Vince), it's only a matter of time before the two men's worlds collide.

With a runtime of 79 minutes, The Devil's Candy doesn't waste a single moment, filling every scene with compelling conflicts and disturbing imagery straight off the bat.

The performances are fantastic across the board, but it's Pruitt who steals the show. Despite the darkness that harbours in Ray, Pruitt plays him like a broken man clinging for purpose, which actually makes him more intimidating.

Another aspect that's worth mentioning is the metal soundtrack. The deafening and sometimes gruesome score is in full-swing anytime Ethan and Ray succumb to evil, emphasising how the overpowering force is preying on their minds.

Visually striking and atmospherically rich, The Devil's Candy is a must-watch for anyone looking for a short horror that favours tension, character, and mood over genre cliches.
