5. Bug

They Look Like People
Lionsgate

Helmed by Exorcist director, William Friedkin, Bug begins with a lonely waitress called Agnes (Ashley Judd) falling for Peter (Michael Shannon), who escaped from a psychiatric institution.

When Peter starts rambling about how insects are stealing his blood and Agnes' friends have been replaced with robots, it's obvious he's deeply unwell. Rather than running a mile, Agnes accepts his delusions, causing her life to spiral out of control.

Instead of relying on cheap scares or gore, Bug focuses on the duo's unravelling minds. Most of the action takes place in a single-room, so you feel like a fly on the wall (or a bug) watching the pair destroy themselves.

Although Bug has a riveting premise and a sharp script, it's Shannon's performance that really sells it. Rather than portraying Peter like a kook, the Boardwalk Empire star plays the character like he adamantly believes everything he's saying. He's so convincing, there are times where you question whether there's a modicum of truth to his outlandish claims.

Now, that's not suggesting Judd doesn't hold her own. Watching Judd's character indulge in Peter's preposterous fantasies purely to alleviate her loneliness isn't just harrowing but heartbreaking.
