10 Highest-Grossing Movies Of 2014 (So Far) - Ranked From Worst To Best
3. X-Men: Days Of Future Past ($302m)
Days of Future Past was all-but-guaranteed to become the biggest X-Men movie ever. With Bryan Singer back in the director's chair and the casts of both the original trilogy and the reboot together in the same movie, the stage was set for the most epic mutant adventure yet. Easily the best X-Men movie since X2 over a decade ago, Days of Future Past is a fitting big-screen adaptation of the iconic comic book arc. Acting as a sequel, prequel and reboot for the franchise all at once, there was a real danger that the plot machinations would bog down the story. However, Singer's direction and Simon Kinberg's script combine to create a movie that features all of the show-stopping action you've come to expect from the franchise, as well as an undercurrent of emotion and more than a few laugh-out-loud moments. With such a sprawling ensemble, several characters were always going to be short-changed but the movie wisely decides to focus on the three most interesting ones; James McAvoy's Xavier, Michael Fassbender's Magneto and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Although the villain is underwritten and there are several gaping plot holes, Days of Future Past is one of the most exhilarating blockbusters you'll see this year. From a financial standpoint, it was a wise move to unite the X-Men cast from both timelines as after just five days in theaters Days of Future Past is less than $50m from passing the total gross of First Class. Domestically, the last two entries in the franchise have been the lowest earners but Days of Future Past will buck the trend and eventually sail past The Last Stand's $459.4m worldwide total to become the highest-earning X-Men movie by some distance.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
