4. Sicario
Rotten Tomatoes: 93% Sicario is certainly more of a thriller than a typical action film; or perhaps it's simply the most intelligent, adult action film ever made. Director Denis Villeneuve directs his cross-border thriller with aplomb, and gets a great central performance out of Emily Blunt as out-of-her-depth FBI agent Kate Macer. Speaking of Blunt, she's surprised everyone by breaking out of that delicate English-rose period-piece typecasting and emerged as an exciting action heroine, between this, All You Need Is Kill (I refuse to call it anything else) and the upcoming Snow White & the Huntsman prequel. People also shouldn't forget that she was the frontrunner for the Black Widow role in the MCU; now it's easy to see why. With Sicario, Blunt couples her grade-A acting ability with a natural aptitude for tense action sequences; I dare anyone to not feel an ounce of the palpable tension that Macer does when her convoy gets stuck in gridlock upon re-entering the States, closely followed by her fresh captive's cartel associates. That shootout will go down as one of the best this year, or even the last ten years; Villeneuve's direction and Joe Walker's editing combine to make a masterclass in suspense. The fact that the rest of the film manages to thrum along to that same level of intensity is a testament to all involved; one of the year's best films period, let alone action films.
