6. Bone Tomahawk
Tomatometer Percentage: 87% Whilst Bone Tomahawk is more of a Western where some messed-up sh*t happens rather than a horror that happens to be set in the American West, it contains enough well-executed disconcerting elements to be counted on this list. Kurt Russell leads the cast as a gruff lawman who sets out with his back-up Deputy (Richard Jenkins), an armed gentleman (Matthew Fox) and an injured cowboy (Patrick Wilson) to save the latter's wife, who has been abducted by cannibalistic natives who dwell in some nearby caves. To be fair to writer-director S. Craig Zahler, his directorial debut transcends its genre boundaries as easy as Kurt Russell finds it to play a 19th Century lawman. It's a joy to witness the merger of a solid period script and a flavour for the grim and gruesome. Said script comes replete with cool characters and authentic-sounding dialogue, and when the film goes full-on 80s Italian exploitation (albeit less extreme in most regards), with its howling troglodyte antagonists, the 1890s backdrop provides a curious and engaging setting. Think The Searchers meets a tame version of Cannibal Holocaust and you're almost there. The gore levels on this one are fairly off-the-scale so be warned if you're susceptible to fainting spells at the sight of crimson.
