The Eighties saw a revolution in comedy, with alternative performers opting to shun traditional stereotypes and turn their fire on the baiters of society's oppressed. Moviegoers had their perceptions challenged by Dustin Hoffman's Tootsie, but not long after the Police Academy franchise rolled into town with all the subtlety of a trucker in a strip club. Basically America's answer to the British Carry On films, the series featured bawdy laughs and daffiness up the ying yang, from the gun-obsessed Tackleberry to the vocal stylings of Michael Winslow, who could impersonate anything to hilarious effect, provided it happened before 1989. Its most notable running gag involved the Blue Oyster Bar, a gay establishment that appeared to play perpetual host to a Village People convention.
