10 Hilariously Awful Cry-Faces That Ruined Moving Scenes

9. Harvey Keitel - Bad Lieutenant

Between Harvey Keitel's repulsive albeit powerful performance and Abel Ferrara's grimy, lurid direction, 1992's Bad Lieutenant became so emotionally overwhelming that one might feel the need to take multiple showers after first viewing and then go give their friends and family a reassuring hug. It's a particularly potent effect. Still, there are a few sparse moments that do prove to be unintentionally hilarious, and distract from the film's propulsive force, one of which is undoubtedly a crying scene by Keitel, whose facial expressions and whiny, animalistic moaning make him look more like he is passing a kidney stone than experiencing existential despair. The scene in question sees Keitel's Lieutenant character repent to a vision of Jesus Christ, along side some mind-bendingly bizarre "crying" (if you want to call it that). The result is that you're left wondering if you were supposed to laugh uproariously or cry along with him. In a way it almost works: Keitel's visceral bleating pairs well with his admonishing screams (directed at the vision of Christ). However, when the actor periodically stops haranguing the Lamb of God, and when his face crumbles into that inimitable mixture of beady eyes and elongated mouth, one is hard-pressed not to chuckle.
