After the financial crisis of 2007 and the ever-present recession much of the world has found itself in since, Oliver Stone's satirical swipe at the cutthroat world of high finance remains as relevant today as it was on its release in 1987. Michael Douglas epitomised the "greed is good" ideology of the era - still with us today - with his excellent portrayal of Gordon Gecko. While Douglas received plaudits from across the critical spectrum for his performance, the same can't be said for Daryl Hannah's efforts in the role of Darien Taylor, the trophy blonde interior decorator whom the girlfriend of Gecko's protege Bud (Charlie Sheen). Earning herself a Razzie Award for her troubles, it's a lacklustre performance devoid of personality. Hannah has more recently been "relegated" to television work, which is a shame since Wall Street is more of a low point in her career rather than typical of a bad actress. Perhaps she'll experience a deserved comeback in the future.
