10 Hilariously Meta Moments From The Muppets Franchise
1. Dr. Teeth Reads The Script
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy2seWzdw0EThe Muppet Movie features one of the craziest examples of breaking the fourth wall ever in a film. Usually, meta moments are quick, throwaway lines or maybe a glimpse at the camera, but here, the fact that the Muppets are characters in a movie is a vital part of the plot.
About a half hour into the film, when Kermit and Fozzie meet Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, they're asked to explain how they got there. Fozzie is about to go into a long story about what lead them to this point, even though you as the audience already saw it all happen. Kermit quickly interrupts him and says, "You can't tell him the whole story, you'll bore the audience!" Fozzie looks right at the camera and apologizes to you, but they still have to catch the band up, so Fozzie actually pulls out the movie's screenplay so Dr. Teeth can read it. Yes, a character in the movie pulls out the screenplay of the movie you're watching. How's that for meta?
That's not even just a one off joke. Later on, when Kermit and Fozzie are stranded in the desert, Dr. Teeth rescues them because he read that they were going to be stranded there in the script. Try to wrap your brain around how exactly that works.
