10 Hilariously Meta Moments From The Muppets Franchise

5. Who Wrote This Script?

The gang has referenced the script of the film they're in quite frequently, a meta joke that allows the writers to poke fun at themselves. A later example from the post-Jim Henson years was this opening song from Muppet Treasure Island.

There's a scene in the movie where a bunch of the characters, both humans and Muppets, are going crazy and getting cabin fever, and so they decide to sing this really bizarre song about that. It gets across the feeling that the movie itself is going crazy, and at least one of the characters seems annoyed about the whole thing, singing, "I'd like to get my hands on whoever wrote this script!"

It's both a self-referential "who wrote this crap" moment, where the writers comment on how weird what's happening is, but it's also as if he's actually annoyed with the creators that they're making everyone do and say these things. The only reason the Muppets are going crazy and dancing around in this goofy way is because a writer came up with that scene, so they want to get their hands on the writing gods who are controlling their actions. That does beg the question, is that line in the script, or within the film's universe was it improvised?
