7. Reconstruction
The Reconstruction Era of the United States is one of the most interesting period of American history. Abraham Lincoln, before his death, had been a proponent of bringing the South back into the United States as normally as possible "With malice toward none, with charity for all." His Vice President Andrew Johnson shared this view of reconstruction, however there was a substantial group of politicians who thought that the South should pay more harshly. Corruption was rampant during the later years of reconstruction and the period is now generally seen as a failure as groups such as the Ku Klux Klan appeared and blacks were pushed back down to second class citizens. There are tons of directions that a film on the Reconstruction Era could go as there are both positive and negative aspects of it to explore. People such as Booker T. Washington could be portrayed on film and although he technically came after reconstruction, George Washington Carver would make for a fascinating movie.
