The production of 1996's The Island of Dr. Moreau was a nightmare, to say the least. Director Richard Stanley was fired and replaced by John Frankenheimer, which led to numerous clashes with the cast and crew. But before filming even began, it seemed that most of its stars were not happy to do the project.

First, there was Marlon Brando, who was the reason why most of the cast signed on. The legendary actor was dealing with his daughter's suicide at the time but could not back out after signing on to do the picture. He also refused to memorize his lines, speaking them only through a radio transmitter.

Then there's Fairuza Balk, who had grown close with the film's original director. After he was sacked, the actress was furious and attempted to leave the project. She only came back upon her agent warning her that her decision would cause her to be blacklisted from Hollywood.

Finally, Val Kilmer was going through a divorce and was not satisfied with the creative direction of the film. But because of the success of Batman Forever, the studio didn't want to let him go and so he was forced to participate due to his contractual obligation.
