3. The Exorcist

There are plenty of naysayers who adamantly believe The Exorcist is overrated. And yet, this adaptation of William Peter Blatty's novel is the first thing many people think of upon hearing the words "Scariest Movie Ever".

Even though horror has been popular since the 1930s, the genre had an air of campiness to it for the longest time. Sure, Dracula and Frankenstein have spooky elements, but they didn't make viewers experience soul-stirring terror, did they?

That all changed when The Exorcist was released. For many moviegoers, it was the first film that didn't just frighten them - it rattled them to their core. Although the mesmerising special effects and chilling score enhance the scares, it's the acting that make The Exorcist work as a whole. If the performers hammed it up, The Exorcist would feel like a B-movie. But because the cast take everything seriously, so do we.

Although time has not been kind to some "classics," William Friedkin's iconic film has lost none of its power. In fact, it's likely The Exorcist will be revered as a timeless masterpiece for many years to come.
