10 Horror Films That Aren't Talked About Enough
7. Lady In White (1988)
Imaginative schoolboy Frank (Lukas Haas) finds himself trapped in a school closet after hours, where he encounters the spirit of a little girl reliving the night of her murder. The appearance of the spectre is closely followed by the very real killer, who has returned to the crime scene to retrieve an incriminating clue. Drawn to the girl and desperate to piece together the exact circumstances surrounding her death, his digging leads him to the mysterious Lady in White.
Lady in White is the perfect Halloween movie: deliciously atmospheric with an intriguing murder mystery at its centre. The reason that it has never managed to reach the exposure of the more famous cinematic ghost stories is that its intended target audience is often unclear.
For much of the film, it feels like a charming children’s supernatural mystery, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that – Disney’s The Watcher in the Woods, for example, is a very effective family horror movie. However, the unsubtle theme of child molestation and racism ostracises the entire demographic that it was seemingly intended for.
It really is a shame, because Lady in White is a wonderful little horror movie that thoroughly deserves to be a Halloween staple. The scenes with the little ghost girl, in particular, are suitably creepy; as is the unsettling use of the song “Did You Ever See A Dream Walking?”
