10 Horror Films That Tried Something Different (And Failed)
8. Child's Play (2019)
Even though the Chucky TV series has been killing it recently, the Child's Play movies haven't been great since... well... Child's Play.
So, when it was announced the 2019 reboot would put a modern spin on the franchise, it didn't sound like the worst idea in the world. With Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, providing the vocals of the killer doll, this reimagining seemed surprisingly promising.
Conceptually, Child's Play has a lot going for it. Rather than sticking with the outdated voodoo shtick, Chucky is now an AI unit called the Buddi. By monitoring his surroundings, Chucky is constantly learning so he can be a better companion for his owner, Andy. But since his safety protocols were deactivated before shipping, Chucky becomes violent, killing everyone he deems a threat to Andy.
On the surface, this sounds like a neat idea. However, it becomes impossible to suspend your disbelief when Chucky inexplicably becomes a tech-god, controlling phones, televisions, lights, cameras, and drones. Not only does this development jump the shark, it doesn't make sense how the toy manufacturers accidentally programmed the Buddi dolls to go full-Skynet.
