10 Horror Movie Backstories That Get Worse The More You Think About It

1. Hannibal Lecter - Hannibal Rising (2007)

Whether portrayed by Brian Cox, Anthony Hopkins, or Mads Mikkelsen, Hannibal Lecter is one of the most chilling horror villains to have graced both the big and small screen. His appetite for human flesh and violence is rivalled only by his thirst for knowledge. Dr Lecter is the only horror villain who could charm you before serving you for dinner.

It’s fitting, then, that this movie monster’s backstory is as fiendishly twisted as the monster he’d become.

As a child, young Lecter lived a privileged life in Lithuania with his exceedingly wealthy parents. He was already remarkably intelligent and would become immensely protective over his little sister Mischa.

However, horror struck when the young siblings were captured by Nazis, led by the brutish Grutas, after they watched the soldiers murder their parents. If that wasn’t traumatising enough, Lecter was forced to eat his own sister in a stew when the group ran out of food.

It wasn’t until the discovery of the dog tags of his childhood captors that an 18-year-old Hannibal (Gaspard Ulliel) would decide to seek vengeance on those who took his little sister from him. It was during this hunt that Lecter would fully develop his taste for human flesh.
