10 Horror Movie Backstories That Get Worse The More You Think About It

9. Victor Crowley - Hatchet (2006)

Hannibal Rising
Dark Sky Films

Adam Green’s Hatchet series is coated as much in blood and gore as it is gleeful self-awareness. This collection of slasher films makes for an exceedingly entertaining time as hatchet-wielding villain Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) creatively brutalises anyone unfortunate enough to step into the Louisiana bayou that he calls home.

Given the franchise’s comedic overtones, it might be surprising to learn that Crowley has a genuinely tragic backstory.

As a boy, Victor lived with his father in a cabin in the depths of the swamp. He was born with a facial deformity which made him the target of ridicule from the other children. It was for this reason his father wanted to keep him hidden.

One Halloween night, however, when Victor’s father was away from home, a group of teenagers threw fireworks at the cabin to scare him. The cabin caught fire, trapping Victor inside.

When his father arrived, he grabbed his hatchet and tried to break down the door to rescue his son. But he was unaware Victor was standing on the other side, and the hatchet struck him in the face.

Victor’s vengeful spirit roams the bayou calling out for his father.

Underneath his murderous rage, Crowley is a lost boy looking for his dad.
