10 Horror Movie Characters Who Had To Die To Win

9. John Nada - They Live

Alien 3 Ripley
Universal Pictures

Initially regarded by contemporaneous critics as a hamfisted attempt at social commentary, John Carpenter's wonderful horror comedy They Live has seen a more favourable reception in the decades since its release. The 1987 film has effortlessly quotable dialogue, game performances (especially from Roddy Piper and Keith David), an outrageous but knowing tone, and interesting thoughts on consumerism, Reagan-era policies, and capitalist exploitation.

After drifter John Nada (Piper) and his colleague Frank (David) join the anti-alien resistance, the duo make their way to a facility where the would-be otherworldly conquerors are broadcasting a signal that hides their appearances and deeper messaging. Following a skirmish with police officers and their double-crossing ally Holly (Meg Foster), Frank dies but not before Nada is able to destroy the transmitter sending out the aforementioned signal. Unfortunately, he is mortally wounded in the process, but his death is not in vain as the world sees the truth behind its once-hidden overlords.

In addition to the material gains because of his actions, Nada's demise has symbolic weight as well due to his defiance - best exemplified by him giving the aliens the middle finger - demonstrating the capacity of everyday people to challenge the status quo.
