10 Horror Movie Characters You Totally Expected To Die... But Didn’t

You may know all the tropes and cliches but you likely didn't see these guys surviving...

Murder, death, and mayhem are par for the course in the horror genre.

Audiences flock to these films knowing full well they're likely to see a whole bunch of people be murdered in gruesome and often creative fashion. Sure, it's incredibly morbid when you stop and think about it, but we've all secretly rooted for horrible characters to meet sticky ends.

Which is why it's all the more surprising when the characters we expect to end up on the chopping block manage to miraculously survive. Be it through the writers wanting to subvert expectations to audiences simply being misled by their own personal readings of characters, there have been many instances within the genre where characters who we thought would end up as dead meat manage to still be standing by the time the end credits roll.

On that topic, here are ten such horror movie characters that audiences were absolutely convinced were going to end up in the morgue, but who managed to live to fight another day.

It goes without saying, but there will be spoilers aplenty throughout, so consider yourself warned.

10. Calvin Bouchard - Jaws 3-D

Alien Covenant
Universal

The writers behind the Jaws series seem to have a very poor opinion of those in positions of authority and the decisions that they tend to make when faced with the threat of shark attacks.

In the first two movies, we have Larry Vaughn, a money-hungry mayor who prioritised the local economy over the lives of innocent people, and for Jaws 3-D, it's Calvin Bouchard, the douchebag manager of SeaWorld, who also values profits over the sanctity of life.

When a baby shark finds its way into SeaWorld, Calvin is quick to have it captured and confined to an incredibly small exhibit that ultimately kills it, prompting the shark's much larger mother to launch an attack on SeaWorld.

Calvin's greed is the cause of all the bloodshed and mayhem of Jaws 3-D, and you'd assume that, given his cruelty has led to many innocent lives being lost, he'd end up as shark chum himself. However, Bouchard isn't sleeping with the fishes by the time the end credits roll around.

It's truly a shame that Bouchard doesn't get his comeuppance, as seeing him brought down by his own nefarious actions would have perhaps made Jaws 3-D a much better film.
