10 Horror Movie Cliches That Need To Die
4. Using A Camera Flash As A Light
A more recent cliche now, which generally occurs when our terrified hero finds themselves in an extremely dark and creepy locale without a flashlight.
And so, they decide to improvise a light source by picking up their nearby camera and taking photos, the flash illuminating their path through the building.
This more often than not results in a bone-chilling encounter with the antagonist, whose form will briefly become visible during one of the flashes.
Though it was certainly an effective and creative flourish back when Saw popularised it some 15 years ago, it's been rehashed far too many times since and never once been anywhere near as impactful.
Examples: Saw, Inside, Shutter, Apollo 18, Host.
