10 Horror Movie Deaths That Weren’t Meant To Be Funny (But Were)
4. Dr. Vornoff Is Killed By A Non-Moving Octopus - Bride Of The Monster
Ed Wood is often hailed as the worst film director ever since his projects were plagued with technical errors, non-sensical storylines, laughable dialogue, and atrocious special effects. One of the projects he was proudest of was the Frankenstein-inspired Bride of the Monster. In this movie (and I use that word loosely), Dr. Vornoff is conducting experiments to create an "atomic superman".
If anyone stumbles upon his work, Vornoff feeds them to his pet octopus. The film concludes with the mad scientist himself falling into the octopus pit where he becomes entangled in the mollusc's tentacles before being struck by lightning. Since Ed Wood had a minuscule budget of $70,000 (which was ironically the largest budget for any of his movies), he couldn't afford an octopus animatronic. Instead, he had to settle for a puppet.
So how do you make a giant cephalopod puppet look like its attacking its victim if it doesn't move? For Vornoff's death scene, Lugosi had to flail about while holding the puppet's legs to simulate he was being attacked by the creature. It is so evident that the octopus is not moving of its own accord that it's hard not to laugh.
