10 Horror Movie Endings No One Understands

3. Krampus

Trick R Treat director/ seasonal horror film hero Michael Dougherty’s Yuletide horror Krampus may be a little less intensely cerebral than many of the horrors on this list.

An affectionate PG-13 horror tribute to the eighties horror efforts of Gremlins' Joe Dante and An American Werewolf in London's John Landis, this instant cult classic sees a young kid get more than he bargains for when he wishes the titular demonic anti Santa would punish his dysfunctional family for the crime of forgetting the true meaning of the season. What follows is the arrival of some seriously scary killer toys and, ironically, a survival horror set up which does indeed force the feuding family members to put aside their differences and work together.

Until the film's jarring ending that is, wherein our hero doesn't get another chance from the eponymous demon and his minions and is instead drop kicked into the depths of hell, only to awaken on a snowy Christmas morning all over again. This odd coda leaves viewers unsure whether it was all a dream, the heroes are trapped in purgatory, or things are simply back to normal and now under the watchful eye of a moralizing anti-Claus.

The point, of course, is that it doesn’t matter, because they'll be a happy family if they choose to stick together and get along, not because of demonic intervention.
