10 Horror Movie Endings That Leave You Speechless
4. Titane (2021)
In Titane, Julia Ducournau takes the autophilia of David Cronenberg's Crash and goes the extra mile, serving up a body horror that is even tougher to stomach than most of the master's greatest hits.
Alexia (Agathe Rousselle) is a murderous car model with a metal plate in her head and an erotic obsession for the humble automobile. After getting down and dirty with a pimped-up Cadillac, she falls pregnant and goes on the run from authorities, posing as fire captain Vincent’s (Vincent London) long-lost son to evade capture.
Far from happy families, however, Alexia's inherent strangeness does not go unnoticed at the fire station where they live, and she becomes another painful complexity in Vincent's steroid-fuelled life. Nevertheless, the pair remain together - even after he realises she's not his son - and Alexia ends up delivering her baby at home.
As if the film hadn’t gone far enough to disgust, revolt or otherwise alienate us (with bitten-off nipples, chopsticks in ears, vaginas dripping motor oil), we are treated to the full experience of Alexia's labour. Her body breaks down, her skin tears away to reveal new metal sections, and the original titanium plate in her skull splits open, killing her as she successfully delivers her child. And what a child it is: the newborn's body is riveted with titanium, flesh and metal and blood and bone made one, with Vincent its unwitting father.
