People love Scream, people like Scream 2, but almost everybody hates Scream 3. From dodgy twists to even dodgier haircuts (who am I to talk, am I right?), there was something about this sequel that just felt... off. That said, it may have lived harmlessly as a deflating and uninspired sequel had it not soured a lot of fans on the whole franchise due to its final killer reveal.

See, Scream 3 ends with the explanation that a dude called Roman Bridger was not only under the Ghostface mask for this movie, but that he was actually the architect of the entire trilogy's story. In a mad series of convoluted twists, it turns out that Roman is actually hero Sidney's half-brother, who was born after Sid's mother Maureen was raped.

Roman is acting out because Maureen didn't want anything to do with him, and as such he vowed to get revenge, goading original Scream killer Billy Loomis into murdering her. So yeah, this dweeb was the big bad the whole time - surprise!

The issue is: when has the twist that someone else has been pulling the strings in a franchise ever worked? It sucked in Spectre, it sucked in Sherlock, and it so often undermines the stories that precede it.

Does it add anything to know that Billy interacted with Roman before deciding to become a killer? No. All it does is undermine Billy's own character in order to add a wrinkle to a story that was better when it was simpler, and artificially make Roman appear more threatening.
