10 Horror Movie Final Girls Who Suffered The Most

7. Sarah Carter - The Descent

A Nightmare On Elm Street Freddy Krueger
Lionsgate

To say that The Descent's Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) went through it would be a bit of an understatement, as much emotionally as physically.

Sarah's torment begins before she even enters the dreaded cave system with her thrill-seeking friends: a year prior, she's involved in a car accident which kills her husband and daughter.

Sarah then reconnects with her pals for a bout of spelunking, which turns grim when the group gets trapped in the cave system and is forced to fend off a fleet of humanoid creatures known as "crawlers."

Sarah has to witness her friends be picked off and devoured one-by-one, and in one instance even has to mercy-kill one of her gravely wounded pals.

To somehow make matters worse she then learns that her friend Juno (Natalie Mendoza) had an affair with her husband before his death, causing her to leave Juno for dead at the end of the film.

Though the original "UK ending" concludes with Sarah failing to escape the caves while the crawlers close in on her, the sequel reveals that she did in fact make it out.

In The Descent Part II, an amnesiac Sarah is forced back into the cave system by the authorities, and after going through hell once more, sacrifices herself to help Rios (Krysten Cummings) escape, being devoured by the crawlers as a result.

And if this isn't awful enough, her sacrifice is ultimately in vain as Rios ends up getting captured and dragged back to the cave entrance at film's end.

There's making your protagonist suffer, and then there's straight-up showing contempt for them like this.
