10 Horror Movie Jump Scares That You NEVER Forget

3. Friday The 13th - The Lake

Dawn Of The Dead Opening
Paramount

Outside of avid horror fans, many people tend to forget what the Friday the 13th series set to be. In fact, the film appeared to set up a supernatural element, alluding to Jason Vorhees, the unfortunate drowning victim that could not be saved due to negligence, as a killer from beyond the grave.

Camp personnel are killed off one-by-one in increasingly gruesome fashion (including an all-timer carried out against a young Kevin Bacon) before final girl Alice comes face-to-face with Pamela Vorhees. Yes, it was Jason's mother who had chosen to carry out a bloody revenge plot against those who had chosen to open the camp where her son had died.

Clashing with the deranged mother, Alice succesfully defends herself by decapitating Pamela with a machete, ending the horror. The sole survivor, she sets out on a canoe onto Crystal Lake. Soft synthesized keyboard tones swell as she awakes the next morning, looking back on the horror she's endured, only to be interrupted by a monstrosity emerging from the lake behind her. Jason Vorhees had returned, disfigured and monstrous, and grappled Alice, dragging her into the lake.

Alice leaps awake with a start, only to realize she's in a hospital suffering from a nightmare. Ultimately, however, it was the audience who was truly in a nightmare, as they had just bore witness to the debut of one of the most notorious movie monsters in horror history.
