10 Horror Movie Reboots (And Scoring How Successful They Were)

9. Psycho (1998)

Child's Play 2019 Chucky
Universal Pictures

A much unloved remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal 1960 film, which was an adaptation of Robert Bloch’s novel of the same name, 1998's Psycho is almost a shot-for-shot remake of Hitch's iconic picture - camera movements and edits are even recreated from the original, and the script remains largely unchanged except for certain modernisations.

The Psycho remake bombed, and the critical backlash was particularly severe with many critics citing weak acting performances across the board and questioning the value of the remake in general.

Psycho (1960) - and it can be said for Hitchcock’s wider filmography - feels modern. One of the director’s great strengths was to draw naturalistic and convincing performances from his cast; this is lacking in the 1998 version and the comparisons between the two films are unflattering for the remake.

The remake’s director, Gus Van Sant, has defended his film as a cinematic experiment, but that doesn’t make it any more fun to watch.
