10 Horror Movie Reboots (And Scoring How Successful They Were)
3. Prometheus
Prometheus is something of an outlier for this list, as it’s a prequel to the Alien franchise rather than an all-out reboot.
Prometheus was a divisive film, with some critics praising the atmosphere and setting, while others argued the film had issues with pacing and plot. Critical consensus seems to have settled since the film’s release, and it’s now widely regarded as a flawed but ambitious attempt to expand the Alien mythos.
Ironically, the film’s biggest problems arise when Prometheus dives into the Alien lore and attempts to give some backstory to the series’ famous Xenomorphs. The picture was widely publicised as a prequel, and when fans finally saw the film they decided that the connections were tenuous and unsatisfying.
Prometheus was always intended to be the start of a new trilogy, but the second instalment, Alien: Covenant, underperformed both critically and commercially, and it now looks likely Ridley Scott’s prequel trilogy will remain unfinished.
