10 Horror Movie Remakes That Were Instantly Forgotten
3. The Grudge (2020)
Whether you fell first for Niomi Watts in The Ring, fell harder for Sarah Michelle Gellar in The Grudge, or started out your horror journey with Megumi Okina in Ju-On: The Grudge, this iconic franchise was a staple of 2000s horror.
A marker of the thirst for paranormal horror of the time, these films followed the story of young women who stumble upon demonic supernatural forces through cursed objects or experiences. Creepy, horrifying and the perfect foundation for sleepover scares, the premise was perfect and became a must-see film for the discerning early-aughts horror fan.
As many fans missed, however, a The Grudge remake was released in 2020 and no one really seemed to notice? Despite being produced by legendary director Sam Raimi, this non-linear film took nine years to make and was released just before the first outbreak of COVID-19.
With a confused narrative, watered-down scares and a formulaic plot, critics gave it predominantly negative reviews, and its slow-burn approach to horror left many reviews feeling sleepy.
