10 Horror Movie Scenes You Didn’t Realise Were Tricking You
7. Urban Legend - The Opening Scene
When it comes to ‘tricking’ audiences I would be remiss not to throw in a classic red herring moment, but there’s actually a little something extra to this.
Famously, the opening of the movie sees Michelle flee a gas station after the attendant, played by Brad Douriff, attempts to lock her in the station with him and chases after her. The whole thing is fantastic, even better with the pay-off that he was never a danger to her - he was only trying to warn her of the murderer hiding in her back seat!
Obviously that’s a great little trick to play, setting someone up as a creepy villain only to completely flip the script, but Reddit user jaketwo91 pointed out that the casting of Brad Douriff himself was part of the gimmick.
He points out that Urban Legend recruited a number of well-known horror villain actors to appear in the movie, including Child's Play’s Brad Douriff, Nightmare on Elm Street’s Robert Englund and Halloween 4 and 5’s Danielle Harris (calling her a villain might be a bit of a stretch but she is a murderer at least).
Seeing these actors, particularly in the opening scene with Douriff, helped direct the audience's suspicions towards characters we presumed would be villains too. Whether or not this is intentional we don’t know for sure, but it’s certainly an interesting idea.
