The marketing around It Comes At Night came under significant fire from theatre-goers when the film was released. People complained of being ‘tricked’ by the misleading promotional material, finding that the movie they ended up watching was vastly different from what they were led to think they would be seeing.

In this way this entry is a little different from the rest, because the scene that tricks you does so because of the way it is taken out of context. In the trailers, a number of shots were shown that, in the actual linearity of the film, are mere dream sequences and don’t represent reality.

Travis experiences a nightmare in which he sees himself walking through the woods - gun and torch raised. He watches as something kills his dog brutally and then ‘wakes up’ (a false wake, he is still dreaming) to see the face of his dead, diseased grandfather dripping black blood onto his arms.

In the trailers, the visage of the dead grandfather was used in a way that suggested the film featured undead humans - almost like zombies. He was used to create a villain that didn’t exist at all within the actual movie.

Other parts of the dream sequences were also used, including one bit where a character spits blood into another’s mouth. At the time you thought you were seeing a true representation of what was to come, when in reality you were being tricked into piecing together your own ideas in a bit of clever marketing.
