10 Horror Movie Sequels That Are Just As Good As The Original

The sequel to Danny Boyle’s gritty zombie horror 28 Days Later (2002), 28 Weeks Later is set, as the title implies, around seven months after the events of the first film.

Featuring a surprisingly robust ensemble cast (including Jeremy Renner and Idris Elba), the sequel chronicles attempts to rebuild a post-zombie society as NATO forces try to maintain designated ‘safe zones’ within the United Kingdom. The film focuses primarily on Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton), two children whose mother is discovered to be an asymptomatic carrier of the rage-inducing virus which has nearly destroyed humanity.

The siblings navigate a London which has been transformed by the outbreak and consequent military occupation, struggling to wrangle with this new normal.

Although this sequel does lack the originality of the first film, 28 Weeks Later goes beyond the initial premise of its predecessor, examining how society might function (or fail to function) in the months which follow the initial unrest and disruption instigated by a zombie outbreak.

Maintaining the gritty realism of the original film, as well as raising tantalising new questions regarding asymptomatic carriers, this is a deliciously bleak account of a dystopian London.
