The world sequel by definition means "continuing a story or developing a previous theme." However, in the horror genre a more apt definition would have to be "more of the same."

Unquestionably there is no other genre in film that exploits the sequel for everything it's worth. Horror franchises are billion-dollar industries today, often doing very little to change their formula or present something new.

Having said that, for every millionth Friday the 13th or Conjuring Universe spin-off that emerges, there will occasionally be a sequel that stands out.

Some producers and directors are brave enough not to care only about money and instead approach a follow up with a desire to truly expand on character and mythology.

Sometimes these sequels are seen as the "black sheep" among their respective series and sometimes they are welcomed with open arms by fans tired of the same old bloodshed.

Children of the Corn is perhaps one of the most derided horror franchises, as a slew of direct-to-video sequels exploited Stephen King's VERY short story for all it was worth.

The first two theatrical films followed the same formula of killer children in a rural town and audiences quickly lost interest. Unfortunately this lack of interest meant that when the series DID try something different no one seemed to notice.

Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest follows two orphans from the infamous corn-covered Gatalin. The boys are adopted by a couple from Chicago and move to the big city. However, one of the children harbors sinister powers and intends to continue the dark ministry of He Who Walks Behind the Rows with a much larger congregation.

Although a direct-to-video movie with all those limitations, Urban Harvest deserves some serious props for taking the basic premise of the first two films and attempting to graft it onto a much more familiar setting.

I mean, when you think of corn, you don't imagine huge stalks in inner city Chicago, right? But somehow, this movie makes it work.

Particularly strong and sinister performances sell the unusual events and gorier and more inventive effects than we've previously seen make this three-quel a boldly different approach.

Urban Harvest is a unique highlight in quite a lackluster horror franchise.
