10 Horror Movie Soundtracks You Need To Listen To

1. Hereditary

Another outing from composer Colin Stetson (who also worked on Red Dead Redemption 2), Hereditary wasn't Stetson's first feature film project, but it was the one that earned him attention, and rightly so.

The feature debut from Ari Aster, Hereditary is a grim portrait of a grief-stricken family as mother Annie (Toni Collette) struggles to cope with the loss of her daughter (Milly Shapiro) in the fallout of her own controlling mother's death.

Hailed by some critics as The Exorcist of this generation, Aster's film has no shortage of chilling moments. However, like everything else on this list, the score was the sweet cherry on top of an already frightening cinema experience.

Described by the composer as needing to feel like a character in the film, the genius of this score is how it uses unconventional instrumentation and voicing to sound like familiar instruments. Rather than using synths, Stetson talks about using contrabass clarinet to create a similar sound. Likewise, Stetson used woodwind keys to replicate percussion. You won't know this just by listening, but when you do it makes the work all the more interesting to hear.

With ethereal tracks like Reborn, Stetson is quickly becoming the new name in horror music.
