10 Horror Movie Tropes That Prove "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It"

8. Room 101

Halloween Jamie Lee Curtis 2018
Warner Bros. Pictures

Named after the Ministry of Love's torture chamber in George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, Room 101 is some sort of fate worse than death (such as torture or a brainwashing programme) that acts as an ominous presence in the film.

Most characters will try and avoid all mention of it. If they do talk about it, they will speak only in whispers. The only character who will try and openly talk about it, is usually the character from "out of town" in an attempt to find out what fate awaits those who are sent there.

It is not unusual for characters who are sent to Room 101 to never be seen again. Those that do return are often so traumatized by their experience that they will refuse to speak of what happened, and are usually the subject of rumours from the locals as to what they were faced with.

Trope Examples: Room 237 - The Shining (1980), Ryan's Prison Cell - House at the End of the Street (2012), The Log Cabin - Addams Family Values (1993)
