10 Horror Movie Twists That Were Hiding In Plain Sight
4. So Many Hints About Adelaide - Us
In Us' opening scene, a girl called Adelaide Wilson encounters her doppelgänger, which leaves her so traumatised, she refuses to speak. Years later, the Wilson family find their house invaded by their own doubles (who call themselves The Tethered), which is led by Adelaide's counter-part, Red.
But in the closing scenes, we learn Red swapped with Adelaide when they first met, meaning our supposed hero is actually a Tethered. When you rewatch the film, there are some clues Adelaide is not who she says she is. When Kitty speaks to her at the beach, Adelaide tells her, "I have a hard time talking." This references the fact that the Tethered can't naturally speak and Adelaide only learned to talk after years of counselling.
Adelaide also becomes distressed when Zora and Jason's clones die since she is a Tethered, just like them. Throughout the movie, Adelaide's white shirt becomes increasingly more bloodstained. This is a nod to the Tethered's red uniforms to highlight she's one of them.
Also, while Adelaide is at the psychiatrist's office as a child, she organises the toys in a straight-line, which foreshadows Red's plan to have every Tethered line up across America to reveal themselves to the world.
