Without a Sammy Davis Jr. track in sight, Candyman from 1992 is another hook-based horror about the eponymous baddie who appears when you say his name five times in the mirror.

The Candyman is Daniel Robitaille, an African American man from the 1800s who was murdered by a racist mob after he fell in love with a White woman. His death was particularly gruesome, as he was covered in honey and left to be stung by bees.

Robitaille's spirit targets the residents of the Cabrini-Green Homes housing projects as revenge for his brutal demise. This eventually leads him to cross paths with Helen Lyle, who might be the reincarnated soul of his former lover.

Once again, Robitaille's methods of comeuppance leave a lot to be desired, but he definitely has a case here. He had his life taken from him in extreme fashion just for falling in love and was a victim of a time period where certain people were unfairly treated as second-class citizens.

Sure, all the murdering maybe doesn't portray him in the best light, but it's easy to feel sympathy for the victim of a hate crime.
