10 Horror Movie Villains Who Never Lived Up To Their Potential
1. The Thing - The Thing (2011)
The Thing is such a flawless creature feature, it would be foolish to try and recreate it. Film producers Marc Abraham and Eric Newman were well aware of this when they had the opportunity to remake John Carpenter's magnum opus, which urged them to create a prequel instead.
Although many were skeptical about this instalment - also called The Thing - the filmmakers seemed to truly care about recapturing the spirit of Carpenter's picture. Rather than relying on unconvincing CGI, the crew used cable-controlled animatronics, puppets, and prosthetics to bring the titular monster to life. Despite initial cynicism, 2011's Thing was shaping up to be a solid movie.
But late in production, the studio ordered for all practical effects revolving around the alien to be replaced with CG models. To the dismay of everyone, the final results were atrocious. Not only was the computer-generated creature unconvincing, it looked worse than anyone expected, since the VFX team had to rush through production to hit their deadline.
What makes this CGI so off-putting is the fact that viewers could've seen a creature that, like The Thing itself, imitated the terror of the original, if it wasn't for this last-minute change.
